CHAPTER THIRTEEN

(Mason)

A million thoughts swirl through my mind as I lay on the soft bed next to the woman who has wormed her way into my heart.

It’s 11:00 p.m.

To me, it is one of those nights when I just can’t fall asleep. Maybe it is the growing sense of danger that I haven’t been able to shake. The ominous feeling that this is only the calm before the violent storm hangs heavily over me.

Eve snuggles closer to me, her breaths coming out evenly. I place a gentle kiss on her forehead. Ever since meeting Eve, my insomnia seems to have disappeared altogether and my nights have become sleepy. But tonight, sleep eludes me.

For the hundredth time, I will my racing heart to calm down. I haven’t heard from Colt since our last meeting. Usually, that would be a good sign since he’d have called if anything unusual happened. But somehow, it makes me even more agitated.

So far, all my research on Michael Kincaid have yielded no results. Nothing has turned up that I do not already know about him. For a second, I go over the pieces I already have with me.

Mike is a member of a drug syndicate who wants out and needs to carry out one last assignment for his boss. The question remains, why did he choose Eve and what is at stake?

In my experience with criminals there’s always an alternative. Why on earth is he fixed on Eve? Could there be more to it than just drug trafficking? Is there something she isn’t telling me?

I look at her sleeping form curiously, wondering what the truth is. I continue to process it until a deep sleep washes over me.

I wake up with a start and for a few seconds, I am confused about where I am. Goosebumps break out on my skin. I look down at Eve’s sleeping form. Sometime during the night, she’d turned around, facing the opposite wall.

While I cannot see her face, the soft heaving of her body calms me down. Rubbing the haze of sleep away from my eyes, I search around the room for the source of the air. Careful not to wake Eve, I quietly roll out of the bed.

The room is dark and the only source of illumination is the reflection of the moon pouring into the room through…

The bedroom door is open. Not ajar, just slightly and I would write it off if I didn’t clearly remember locking it the night before. Instinctively, I roll out of bed and walk closer to the door to inspect it.

HERE COMES THE STORM!!!

Muddy footprints line the path from the slightly open door into the room, disappearing into the darkness of the parts of the room blocked off from the moonlight. I am torn between stirring Eve awake and hoping she sleeps through the storm that is sure to hit. The decision is abruptly ripped from me as my eyes catch a lone, unfamiliar figure in the shadows.

Thinking about it now, I noticed the heavy-set man at Club Rose back in London.
